Who we are

Charles Sullivan has a solid basis of practical experience managing surveys and other common data collection methods, as well as in owning a rapidly growing business. In 2007, he returned to work for Capital Research after two years leading ACNielsen’s Public Enterprise industry practice group. From 2001-05 he worked from home, with most of the work matching the company tagline then: “we manage the tough stuff”.

He was a partner for eight years in BRC Marketing & Social Research (now Research NZ), Wellington's most successful research company during the 1990s. A broader perspective to many issues comes from his earlier work: managing a public sector research group, lecturing in business statistics at the University of Otago, and psychology research.

Fiona McPherson has regularly assisted Charles with literature reviews, questionnaire development, and report-writing. She also carries out independent work on practical aspects of memory and website development.

Charles also has established productive working relationships with several regular collaborators outside Capital Research. These include:

Carolyn O'Fallon, policy analyst and researcher. Her website shows examples of our collaboration on transport over the last 10 years or so. This includes a major stated choice study concerning car use reduction in New Zealand's three major cities, analyses of the NZ Household Travel Survey, and our evaluation of "walking school bus" networks.

The Kinnect Group, whose other members include:

Kate McKegg of The Knowledge Institute. Kate has specialist skills in policy and programme evaluation, evaluation capacity building, research, training and facilitation.  She has over 15 years experience in applying these skills in many contexts and sectors, including education, health, social development, sport, broadcasting, employment and housing.

Judy Oakden of Judy Oakden Consultancy. Judy is a skilled research and evaluation practitioner with over 20 years experience, including management positions in leading research companies both in NZ and the UK. She has knowledge of the education, health, social marketing, consumer, business to business and international research sectors.

Nan Wehipeihana of Research Evaluation Consultancy (REC) Ltd. Nan has more than 17 years evaluation and research experience. Work with Māori, including whānau and iwi, is an area of particular interest and expertise. Nan has extensive public and private sector experience including work in the broadcasting, education, employment, housing, justice, social development, social policy, sport and recreation sectors. Nan is of Ngāti Tukorehe, Ngāti Porou and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui descent.
